Overview

A growing e-commerce brand approached us with inconsistent and incomplete Google Ads tracking. Their campaigns were driving traffic, but Google Ads couldn’t accurately attribute results—leading to unstable ROAS, wrong optimization signals, and wasted spend.

Our goal was clear:

➡️ Build a complete, accurate, and scalable conversion tracking system inside Google Tag Manager that captures every key action a user takes from website visit, purchase, calls etc.

Challenges Identified

During the initial audit, we uncovered major tracking gaps:

  • Add to Cart and Begin Checkout events were not firing consistently

  •  Purchase conversions were missing or double-counting

  •  Phone call and WhatsApp tracking were not implemented at all

  •  No form submission tracking, causing lead-gen campaigns to underperform

  •  Google Ads lacked reliable data to optimize for high-intent users

  •  No Enhanced Conversions → Loss of match quality & attribution accuracy

To fix conversion accuracy, we needed a structured full-funnel tracking system.

Our Strategy & Implementation

We rebuilt the entire tracking setup via GTM with clean event mapping, reliable triggers, and tested tag firing rules.

1. Add to Cart Event Tracking

  • Implemented custom triggers detecting cart additions

  • Mapped dynamic product parameters (ID, price, value)

  • Synced event with Google Ads + GA4 for cross-platform consistency

2. Begin Checkout Event Tracking

  • Configured event triggers at checkout initiation

  • Ensured clean deduplication to avoid event inflation

  • Enabled Enhanced Conversions to improve attribution

3. Purchase Tracking

  • Reimplemented the Purchase tag with transaction ID validation

  • Linked revenue, currency, and product data

  • Added Enhanced Conversion signals for higher match accuracy

  • Verified with test transactions and GTM Preview mode

4. Phone Call Tracking

  • Added click-to-call triggers for mobile users

  • Linked call actions as secondary and primary conversions

  • Ensured proper attribution back to campaigns and keywords

5. WhatsApp Call / Chat Tracking

  • Created custom event triggers for WhatsApp button clicks

  • Connected events to Google Ads with correct CTAs

  • Allowed optimization for high-intent customer interactions

6. Form Submission Tracking

  • Implemented event-based form tracking using GTM listeners

  • Handled both AJAX and traditional form submissions

  • Synced with Google Ads to improve conversion optimization

Quality Assurance & Validation

Before publishing, we completed a full QA cycle:

  •  Validation in GTM Preview mode

  •  Debugging with GA4 DebugView

  •  Cross-checking events in Google Ads Real-Time Diagnostics

  •  Anti-duplication testing for purchase events

  •  Browser, ad-blocker, and device-level testing

This ensured 100% accuracy across all tracked events.
